Synopsis:

Lu Over the Wall goes not just beyond the wall, but pinwheeling through the neighbors garden and roughly into other dimension but subsequently, what else would you expect from the director of 2004s deranged Mind Game? If everything, Lu feels neutral by comparison, although by traditional excitement standards, this far and wide away-fetched, wildly imaginative (and 100% unofficial) riff on the subject of speaking Hayao Miyazakis Ponyo which was itself a drifting reimagining of Hans Christian Andersens The Little Mermaid puts a zany spin upon the olden guy-meets-mergirl formula, where a magical sea swine is beckoned grounded by the hermetically sealed of a mopey rockers emo music.

Whereas Miyazakis universally accessible Ponyo felt as well as it was targeted at toddlers, Lu skews older, attractive more directly to adolescent and adult viewers permitted to have their minds blown by the title physicals supernatural shenanigans. In terms of craftsmanship, the film has a scrappy, sometimes cheap see to it (characters tune flat, linked to thin-lined Etch-a-Sketch drawings, superimposed again more glowing hand-painted backgrounds), for which it on peak of compensates via subsidiary strengths namely, a trio of relatable, nimbly-written human protagonists and Lu, who can fine-appearance form and rework water at will. These qualities, and an delectable overall prudence of weirdness, earned the film severity prize at the 2017 Annecy lightheartedness festival.
